Happy New Year my Loves! 2018 was certainly a ride wasn’t it? In addition to the many lessons learned, I’m almost certain we all made a mental list of things to not do in 2019. Ah, new year’s resolutions. Every year I vow not to make them, but I still do. I mean what’s the fun in starting the new year without some promise of change? Isn’t that the point of it all? Starting fresh, taking pointers from the previous year, and improving on the next year? I guess where most of us go wrong, is the unrealistic resolutions we set for ourselves. Resolutions we know we’re never going to follow through on, but we set them anyway because they look good on paper. Here’s a new year’s resolution for ya….make a promise to yourself that you can actually keep.
“Promise yourself that you will keep all the promises you made to yourself.” ~Renuka Pitre
1. Check in with your loved ones
This first resolution seems so simple, yet time and time again I find myself disconnected from the people I love the most. It’s not intentional. Sometimes I get so caught up in my own life that I forget to check in to see how the other humans in my life are doing. Staying connected is so important to your psyche. Keep your loved ones close and on speed dial….always.
2. Say I love you
Following up on resolution number one. “I love you” is not always the easiest thing to say out loud. But how many times have you regretted not saying it? If you love someone let them know, give them their flowers while they’re still here. Plus it’s always nice to hear someone say it to you. Don’t forget to say it to yourself, often.
3. Forgive and let go
Leave all grudges and negativity where they belong…in the past. January 1st is the perfect time to let go of old baggage and move on. Forgiveness is one of the best new year’s gifts you can give to yourself. Let go of things that no longer serve you and start the new year with a clean slate.
4. Be grateful and gracious
Find something to be grateful for everyday. Believe me, there will always be something. It’s a fantastic way to remind yourself of your many blessings. We are all fortunate to be able to experience this thing called life, focus more on the good and always be gracious to those who make you feel loved and appreciated.
5. Enjoy the little things
A new book; a day off from work; a sweet text from your love; the smell of good coffee; chocolate cake; hugs from your niece and nephew. It’s the little things in life sometimes that bring the most joy. Every now and then, take time to stop, smell the roses and live in the moment. Find pleasure in the simplest of things.
6. Smile more
Smiling sometimes requires effort, especially in less than epic situations. But it can brighten someone’s day including your own. Don’t underestimate its healing power either, there’s a reason for the saying “smile through the pain.” Also, if you can manage it, Laugh. As hard as you can, as often as you can, and see how much of a difference it makes. It’s like food for your soul.
7. Be good to yourself
This should definitely be one of your must do resolutions. Pamper yourself, be kind to yourself. Remember that you are an amazing, unique human being who deserves all the good things this life has to offer. Never skimp on, or feel guilty about opportunities to do something for you. Love on yourself always. Be good to your temple, and do not neglect your mental health.
8. Find your theme song
When I step out of the house each morning, I walk to the beat of “Grown Woman” by Beyonce. It’s my way of getting pumped for the day ahead. Find a song that triggers all your good feelings, one that empowers and makes you feel like you can take on the world. Find your inner Sasha Fierce and slay girl…slayyyy.
9. Try something new
It can be as simple as eating at a new restaurant. At least once this year, do something out of the ordinary, something that doesn’t fit with your regular routine. It doesn’t have to be anything grandiose. You’ll be surprised how trying one new thing can lead to other positive changes in your life. But start small, don’t force it.
You’re probably wondering what I mean by this. I mean, if you’re reading this then you’re alive right? Yes, you are, but are you truly living? Or just merely existing? Because there’s a difference. Existing is basically just getting by in this life (we are all guilty of doing this at some point). Truly living, is finding the joy in moments and embracing the world around you. It’s creating experiences and allowing yourself to feel all the emotions that these experiences bring.
Happy New Year
I hope something in this list resonates with you for 2019. My wish is that this year brings you everything you deserve and that you are able to follow through on your own personal resolutions. Sending you all the love and positive vibes your heart can hold. Here’s to a fabulous year…for all of us.
