It’s official! Summer is finally here and I know most of us have a must-do list a mile long (show me yours and I’ll show you mine). What is it about this weather that makes us want to live our best lives? Probably all that Vitamin D. Listen, there is no shortage of travel destinations when the weather is this beautiful. I know the first thing that’s always on my summer list is jetting off to a location somewhere in the tropics. But if you’re thinking of taking a staycation this season, here are some ideas to get you started on your best summer ever.
1. Discover your city
If you’re a creature of habit like me, then you probably tend to stick to the places you’re familiar with. Step outside the box, I guarantee there are still quite a few museums, parks or restaurants you have yet to visit. Take some time to really get to know the city you live in…. you might discover some new reasons to love it.
2. Head to the beach
There is no better way to de-stress than listening to those waves. Walk with your favorite novel, or that book you’ve been meaning to read all year. In other words, take some time to do you, and be sure to double up on that sunscreen.
3. Take a class

Wine & Design, Brooklyn
Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn but keep putting off? You can find some amazing deals on Groupon and LivingSocial. Learn a new language, take a baking or bartender class. Whatever you choose, just be sure to have fun with it.
4. Attend local summer events

AfroPunk Fest, Brooklyn 2017
Here in Brooklyn, you can always find outdoor concerts (for free most of the time), food festivals, craft shows or art shows to attend. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Eventbrite and I Don’t Do Clubs are just two of the many sites that can help you find any fun event in your city.
5. Volunteer your time
I don’t know about you, but lately I’ve been feeling the urge to do engage in activities that are much more meaningful. There is so much going on in the world right now and we sometimes tend to feel helpless. You can find opportunities in your city at VolunteerMatch. Stop feeling helpless….get involved!
