Winter is officially in full swing, and with it comes frigid temperatures, snow, sleet, ice, and freezing rain. I’ll be honest, on days where the temperature is below freezing, a snuggie is the only item of clothing I deem fit to consider a winter wardrobe essential. Of course, wearing a snuggie outside the house is probably not a good idea if you consider yourself kinda sorta fashion conscious. And while I don’t consider myself a Fashionista per se, I do like to look put together when I step outside, even on days when staying warm while ‘looking cute’ is especially hard to achieve.
I always keep it simple when it comes to fashion, I find that it is easier to create an effortless look when you stick to the basics. A classic piece can always be dressed up or dressed down, so I tend to keep these basic winter items in rotation year after year.
Wool Coat
A classic wool coat is great for those after-work events or weekend parties. Wool coats are stylish, they fit well, they come in a variety of colors and lengths, and they immediately pull your look together. I’m more of a neutral girl myself, so I stay with basic blacks, navy blues, browns, greys or camels, but the choices are endless. You can never go wrong with a wool coat that flatters your curves.
Puffer Coat
A puffer coat is a must in frigid temperatures, and necessary for keeping you nice and dry when the weather gets downright nasty. Puffer coats also come in a variety of styles and colors to keep you looking chic while staying warm and covered. It’s difficult to find hats to fit over my afro puff, so I always get a puffer with a detachable hood.
Sweater Dress
For me, the sweater dress is like winter’s little black dress. You can wear it with knee-high boots, booties, pumps and tights. You can dress it up with statement earrings, scarves, belts clutches and go from the office to a night out on the town.
Sweaters
Yep…because sweaters are a girl’s best friend in the winter months. I have them in all colors, sizes and shapes and pair them with slacks, skirts or jeans for all types of occasions. They’re warm, they’re cute, and they’re great for layering when the weather calls for it.
Knee-High Boots
Knee-High boots are not only stylish, they keep your legs warm, and can be paired with dresses, skirts or jeans for a chic look.
Booties
I love love LOVE booties. I’m not really a ‘pumps’ kinda girl, so I live for booties in the fall and winter. They come in all styles and shapes, and they go with everything.

Snow Boots
The reason for having a pair of snow boots on hand is very simple….cute knee-high boots and booties are NOT made for snow, slush or black ice.

Skinny Jeans
While I prefer a nice pair of wool pants for the office, skinny jeans are my go-to for almost every other occasion. And because jeans are not the warmest item of clothing, I “winterize” them by wearing a pair of wool tights underneath. Skinny jeans are sleek, look great with boots and can be worn with any item in your closet, and they are sooooo comfy.
Tights, Scarves, Gloves, Hats
These items are essential for keeping my fingers, toes, ears and neck nice and toasty, and they are great for accessorizing. I like using fun colors and textures to mix and match with whatever I’m wearing. Throw in a tote and a cup of coffee and I’m ready for whatever Old Man Winter throws at me.
How about you? What basic pieces do you keep in your closet for the winter season?
Very cool. Try a Canada Goose jacket or coat… you will love it and live in it. I wear mine as long as I can… sometimes until May! ?
